Arzachena is a pretty town located in the Gallura area, in the north-east of Sardinia, a few kilometres from the renowned Costa Smeralda. Known for its natural beauty and historical heritage, Arzachena attracts numerous visitors throughout the year.
The town is in a privileged location, surrounded by hills, mountains and beautiful white sandy beaches. Arzachena offers easy access to several enchanting beaches, such as the famous beaches of Liscia Ruja, La Celvia and Liscia di Vacca, Capriccioli... For trekking lovers, about 9 km away is San Pantaleon 'the artists' village' perched on the granite massif of Cugnana, ideal for trekking and outdoor excursions;
The town has an ancient and fascinating history, with evidence of human settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. The town also offers numerous cultural and tourist attractions. The Museum of Arzachena houses a collection of archaeological artefacts, providing an insight into the history of the region. One of the main destinations is La Prisgiona, a Nuragic settlement that includes a nuraghe and a village of 100 huts. A central tower, flanked by two lateral towers, can be seen at this archaeological site.
The road that connects Arzachena to the coast is a beautiful panoramic path, amidst wind-sculpted stones, from which one can admire the port of Cannigione and the Maddalena archipelago.
Nearby there are also sites of interest such as the enchanting church of San Giovanni Battista, which dates back to the 12th century, and the church of Santa Lucia, with its famous staircase that is decorated by a different artist each year.
Inland in Gallura, about 10 km from the Gulf of Arzachena, you can visit the Tomb of the Giants of Coddu Ecchju. Legend has it that people of imposing stature lived in the surrounding area; in reality, the tombs are collective sepulchres.
A visit to the Stella Maris Church is a must. This church is a true architectural creation: a white casket overlooking Porto Cervo's new marina.
